IIHF Nominations

May 19th, 2011 Prague ,Czech Republic—The Czech Women’s Development Committee announced the nominations of 16 national team players to attend the first ever International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) High Performance Camp.

The camp with will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia from July 5th to the 12th is a result of an effort to accelerate the growth and quality of the women’s game.

“This has been in the works since last summer when the women’s committee met in Vierumäki, Finland and is something the planners are very excited about”, said Czech Team Development Director, James Craig.

The camp will be attended by some of the best female players in the world with seven or eight players being nominated by the top counties. “We were given allocations for each position, which made the selection process that much more difficult”, said Craig. For the U18 level the team was required to nominate only players born in 1994 and 95.”

“We had to look at a number of factors, but when it got down to final decisions in some positions it came to physical condition and the results of our development team testing”, said Karel Manhart. The camp is being anticipated to be extremely physical, so this was a big consideration for team staff.

“We have a lot of players who sacrificed a tremendous amount personally to participate and it says a lot for their commitment level to our Olympic ambitions”, said Craig.

IIHF

The Czech National teams are coming off of an extremely successful season having swept the 2011 IIHF DII World Championships in Caen, France last April and taking 4th in the Top Division of U18 is Stockholm in January.

For the High Performance Camp the IIHF will create combined Super Teams with a mix of players from each country.

“The big question our players ask me is who USA and Canada will send", said Craig I think it will be a thrill to skate with and against the best of the best, especially at the senior level.”

In addition to the players, Czech National Team coach James Craig will coach one of the senior teams along with a coach from another country. Also coaching will be Eva Holešová who will be assigned to one of the U18 teams. “Eva is part of a program where we are trying to create a career path for our senior players after they retire. We are not trying to push her out the door just yet, but when she does retire we want her to be able to step right in.” said Craig.

Veteran players, Holešová and Petra Šmardová recently attended the IIHF Women’s Symposium in Zurich, Switzerland along with head coach, Karel Manhart and director, James Craig. At the Symposium Craig made a presentation about the cultural challenges faced by women’s hockey in the Czech Republic.

“We feel super positive about the immediate and extended future of our teams. For the upcoming season we will see positions on our A Team challenged far into the roster”, said Craig. “Women’s hockey has advanced so much in the last year and we are really proud of the work that has been done, not with just our team, but also with the other countries. This is a great time to be a female hockey player.”
